ROBOT® Learn

Discounts are a sales tool. Most trades use them like an apology.

Walk through how a discount usually happens in the service industry. The customer hesitates on the quote. The tradie, sensing the job slipping, knocks a couple of hundred off — usually over the phone, sometimes as a hastily added line at the bottom of a revised PDF: "Discount    –$200".

That line does damage twice. First, it tells the customer your original price had fat in it — so what else is padded? Second, it teaches them that hesitating gets money off, so they hesitate again next time. You paid $200 to look less trustworthy.

The big service companies — the ones with fleets of vans and call centres — figured this out decades ago. They never discount as a line item. They run promotions: framed, time-boxed, presented with intent. Same dollars, completely different psychology. Until now the software that does this properly cost enterprise money. That's the gap robot® Quote closes.

The line-item discount vs the framed promotion.

A discount buried as a line item is silent. Your customer scrolls past it on the way to the total. It has no story, no deadline, no reason to exist — it just quietly confesses that your pricing is negotiable.

A framed promotion is loud. In robot® Quote, when your customer opens the quote they're greeted with a popup you wrote: "A little something extra — $150 off, valid for another 7 days." The countdown runs by itself. The discount has a reason ("booked this month", "returning customer", "winter special"), a window, and a moment of delight attached to it. Same $150 — but now it's a gift with a clock on it, not a confession.

A robot® Quote opening on a customer's phone — promotion, options and accept, all live.

Why the countdown matters more than the amount.

Here's the counterintuitive part: the size of the discount matters less than the deadline on it. A customer with three quotes in their inbox isn't choosing between prices — they're choosing between deciding now and deciding later. Later usually wins, and later is where jobs die.

A visible, ticking expiry gives them a reason to decide this week. Not pressure — clarity. "This offer exists until Friday" is information they can act on. We've watched it happen on our own jobs: the gap between quote-sent and quote-accepted shrinks when the offer has a window, because "I'll think about it" now has a cost.

The other move: the free extra with a crossed-out price.

Sometimes the smarter promotion isn't money off at all. In robot® Quote you can attach a free item instead — a safety inspection, a premium fixture upgrade, an extra powerpoint — and when the customer claims it, it lands on their quote as "Included — FREE" with its real value crossed out beside it.

The psychology is completely different from a discount. Money off shrinks your total (and your margin). A free extra adds perceived value while costing you trade price. The customer sees a $180 line item they're getting for nothing; it cost you forty minutes and some cable. Perceived value up, margin intact, and your quote now contains something none of the competing PDFs have.

We tested this on our own business first.

We're not a software company that guessed what trades need — we're a Sydney electrical and smart-home business that built this for ourselves. When we moved our own quoting from static PDFs to interactive quotes with framed promotions and optional extras, two numbers moved: upsells went up (customers tick extras themselves when they're presented properly) and quotes converted faster (deadlines beat dithering). Only after it worked on our own jobs did we release it as robot® Quote.

Do discounts properly, starting with your next quote.

The rules are simple: never as a line item, always with a story, always with a window, and consider a free extra before money off. robot® Quote makes all four the default — the promotion pops when the quote opens, the countdown runs itself, and the accepted quote flows straight into Xero.

Try it on your next real job — free for 30 days at robotplan.com.au. Electricians: it pairs with robot® Plan, which marks up the floor plan and writes the quote for you.

robot® Quote is made by robot® Smart Homes — the Sydney company that quotes every one of its own jobs with this exact software.
