Smart Home Build Checklist: Questions to Ask Before You Commit

Whether you choose to work with us or another home automation installer, it’s worth asking the right questions before you lock in your system. The decisions you make now will shape how you live with your technology for years to come.

1. How Often Will a Technician Need to Visit for Small Changes?

Some systems require a service call for even the smallest updates such as renaming a scene, changing a schedule, or adjusting a light level.

Ask if you’ll have the flexibility to make changes yourself, or if you’ll be tied to ongoing service costs.

2. How Much Control Will I Have Over Day-to-Day Changes?

Think about access codes for front doors, garages, and gates. Will you be able to add, remove, or update these easily, or will you have to wait for your installer to do it for you?

3. Can I Create My Own Customisations?

From personalised “goodnight” scenes to seasonal lighting schedules, the best systems let you tailor your home to your routines without needing outside help.

4. Are There Ongoing Fees Per User?

Some platforms charge per user or device for access (sometimes every month). Over time, this adds significant cost.

Ask about all ongoing fees upfront, including subscriptions for remote access or notifications.

5. Can I Add New Devices or Features Myself?

A good smart home grows with you. If adding a new light, lock, or camera requires a technician every time, the system may not suit your needs in the long term.

Bottom line:
These questions aren’t just about features - they’re about ownership, flexibility, and the freedom to adapt your home to the way you live. The more you can control yourself, the less dependent you’ll be on service calls, extra fees, and outside schedules.
